The federal estimate covers 30 states and D.C.; tax collections are not retail sales or business profit.
Census estimates cover July 2025 through June 2026. Its 15.7% growth comparison uses FY2022, not calendar 2021.
A September 10 Census Bureau release estimates that 30 states and the District of Columbia collected $3.55 billion in cannabis excise taxes between July 2025 and June 2026.
The reported increase of 15.7% compares $3.06 billion in fiscal year 2022 with fiscal year 2026. The program began collecting data in 2021, but that is not the fiscal-year baseline used for this percentage.
Census attributes the FY2023 decline largely to California's removal of its cultivation tax on July 1, 2022. Subsequent annual totals rose as additional states collected the tax.
Editorial clarification, September 14, 2026: Fiscal-year labels and a primary source have been added. These are Census estimates of tax receipts, not VeedAtlas measurements of sales, profit or current product availability.
